The Indian franchise group, which opened India’s first Costa Coffee outlet in 2005, has reached its 100-store milestone in the country with its latest New Delhi location

Devyani International Limited (DIL) has opened its 100th Costa Coffee store in India with a new outlet in New Delhi’s Khan Market shopping district.

DIL became Costa Coffee’s exclusive Indian franchisee in 2005 and opened the coffee chain’s first store in the country in New Delhi’s Connaught Place commercial centre in the same year.

Following the market entry, DIL and Costa Coffee said the franchise partnership would see at least 300 Costa Coffee stores launched across India.

In August 2021, DIL announced a five-year extension of its partnership with the coffee chain.

“We are elated to have registered the 100th store milestone for Costa Coffee in India towards the end of December 2022 and celebrate the efforts of the entire team,” said Virag Joshi, CEO, Devyani International Limited.

In November 2022, DIL announced that Costa Coffee achieved 134% year-on-year sales growth in the three months ended 30 September 2022 to reach Rs 220m ($2.7m).

Alongside Costa Coffee, DIL also operates stores of KFC and Pizza Hut across India.

Costa Coffee is also a very big opportunity. We can open marquee stores—highways, hospitals, offices, airports—you can be everywhere.

Costa Coffee is currently present in over 40 countries globally, operating approximately 2,800 stores across the UK and more than 1,100 in international markets.

Several major international coffee chains have recently sought to catalyse increased consumer demand for premium coffee across India.

Starbucks reached 300 stores in India in October 2022 and said it is increasingly positive about its outlook in the country, while fellow US chain Dunkin’ said the ‘thriving Indian market’ represents significant growth opportunities for the brand, which launched a new store design in November 2022 as part of strategy to attract younger consumers and showcase its revamped coffee menu.

Additionally, Canada’s Tim Hortons and the UK’s Pret A Manger made their Indian debuts in 2022, with the former planning to open at least 120 stores in the next three years.
